Cyprus Travel Outlook Brightens as Nine Countries Ease Advisories
Active Diplomacy Pays Off: Nicosia Secures More Accurate and Balanced Travel Advisories Across Europe
In recent months, a significant improvement has been recorded in how several European countries portray the image of Cyprus in their official travel advisories. According to sources, this shift is the direct result of coordinated diplomatic actions by Nicosia.
Specifically, reports indicate that from March 4, 2026, to the present, travel advisories from nine countries have been revised in favor of Cyprus following active efforts by the Republic of Cyprus. These countries include: Bulgaria, France, Denmark, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, and Sweden.
The significance of this development is twofold:
- It reflects that the actual situation in the country is being recognized more clearly by foreign governments.
- It demonstrates that the diplomatic maneuvers of the Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have yielded practical results, leading to more balanced, accurate, and proportional wording.
"The core difference is clear: more targeted references are being adopted, separating the Republic of Cyprus from broader regional developments and reflecting the situation on the ground with greater accuracy," sources noted.
- France: Removed the recommendation for citizens to avoid the British Sovereign Base areas (Akrotiri and Dhekelia) except for absolutely necessary travel.
- Sweden: Deleted references regarding potential air traffic disruptions at Larnaca and Paphos airports.
- The Netherlands: Replaced the phrase "significant security risks" with "specific risks," a change that limits the impression of a generalized threat.
- Poland: Explicitly added that "the overall situation in Cyprus is stable" and removed warnings that Middle East developments might pose a direct threat to Cyprus. Poland now classifies Cyprus at Level 1 (normal precautions).
- Bulgaria: Reduced its advisory level from Level 3 (avoid non-essential travel) to Level 2 (exercise caution and stay informed).
- Italy: Modified language regarding potential changes in airspace and flights, removing heavy references to regional instability and deleting the advice to avoid areas near the British Bases.
- Denmark: Deleted a paragraph linking the situation in Cyprus to an attack on a British airbase and its potential impact on air traffic.
"The conclusion is clear. The Republic of Cyprus did not remain a passive observer to language that did not reflect the reality of our country. Through coordinated diplomatic actions, evidence-based updates, and constant contact with foreign governments, Nicosia has succeeded in ensuring a more accurate depiction of reality," the sources concluded.
