Lebanon Greenlights Maritime Border Agreement with Cyprus
The decision formalizes Lebanon–Cyprus maritime boundaries and sets the stage for negotiations with Syria.
The Cabinet of Lebanon, during its session on Thursday, October 23, chaired by President Joseph Aoun and attended by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, approved the delimitation of maritime borders between Lebanon and Cyprus, according to an official announcement published on the website of the Lebanese Presidency.
Following the meeting, Lebanon’s Energy Minister, Joe Sadegh, speaking to reporters about the next steps with Cyprus after the border agreement—given that the maritime boundaries in question overlap with those of other countries—said that the government had received a report which will be reviewed by the Minister of Information.
“The next step will be to settle the maritime border delimitation with Syria, which must take place,” he added.
Sources from the Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry described the development as “a very positive step” in comments to the Cyprus News Agency.
Further details are expected to be revealed during the Lebanese Energy Minister’s official visit to Cyprus on November 10.
