Cyprus Institute Unveils New Research Infrastructure

The Cyprus Institute has inaugurated BioMERAplusCHEM, a new national research infrastructure designed to provide advanced analytical capabilities for science, public health, and local industry.

Innovation and Sustainable Development for the Local Economy

The new national research infrastructure BioMERAplusCHEM responds to the mission and work of the Cyprus Institute, which is based on scientific excellence and the creation of infrastructure and their connection to the economy and small and medium-sized enterprises, with the aim of innovation and sustainable development, said the President of the Institute, Stavros Malas, at the inauguration of this system on Friday. At the ceremony, held at the Cyprus Institute, the Chief Scientist, the Director of the Research and Innovation Foundation, diplomats from foreign embassies, and other officials were present. Malas stated that we are witnessing yet another infrastructure project being implemented, which is not only an ecosystem of the Foundation but of the entire country, as it has been funded by national resources. The goal, he added, is to provide access to it for scientists and businesses.

A Strategic Milestone for Advanced Analytics

The project leader, Kirsi Lorentz, mentioned that BioMERAplusCHEM marks a milestone for the research and broader innovation community of Cyprus. The system, she said, constitutes a strategic infrastructure of advanced analytical capabilities, designed to provide high-quality data and services to researchers, academic institutions, public bodies, and industry.

Addressing Global Challenges Through Data

The data produced through BioMERAplusCHEM, the project leader said, is of critical importance for supporting national priorities. At the same time, she said, they contribute to addressing global challenges in the fields of health, environment, cultural heritage, sustainable development, and advanced materials.

From Geological Samples to High-Tech Materials

According to a relevant press release, BioMERAplusCHEM offers the capability for detailed analysis of an extremely wide range of samples, covering applications that extend from advanced materials, geological samples, and cultural heritage objects to electronic circuit boards, human, animal, and plant tissues, battery components, and many other specialized categories of materials. This detailed analysis contributes to the production of valuable scientific data for critical areas such as public health, the environment, food security, and energy transition, it is stated.
