Tax Department: Nationwide Inspection Campaign in Coastal Businesses Underway

Targeting Compliance With the Legislative Framework for Issuing Legal Receipts and Accepting Card Payments.

A nationwide tax compliance campaign is currently underway through on-site inspections by the Tax Department, with an emphasis on businesses in coastal areas. Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markidis stated to CNA that the objective of the campaign is "to ascertain compliance with the legislative framework governing transactions regarding the issuance of legal invoices and receipts, as well as the acceptance of card payment methods."

"On-site inspections are being conducted at all hours of the day and night on a nationwide basis, with an emphasis during the current period on businesses operating in coastal areas due to their increased seasonal economic activity," Mr. Markidis said. He noted, however, that "an intensification of on-site inspections and an expansion of their geographical distribution is expected in the coming period."

Furthermore, he stated that the instructions given to the authorized officers of the Tax Department are to conduct inspections "with discretion, courtesy, and professionalism."

"Particular importance is given to maintaining the orderly and smooth operation of businesses. Every possible effort must be made by the officers to ensure that business activity is not disrupted during the conduct of on-site inspections," he stated, adding that the sole purpose of the campaign is to strengthen tax compliance.

The Tax Commissioner appealed to citizens, who may be asked for information outside a business with which they just transacted regarding the issuance of legal invoices and receipts or the acceptance of card payment methods, to cooperate with the authorized officers of the Tax Department.
