Cyprus Launches Pilot Technical Junior High School to Bridge Education and Skills Gap

Education Minister introduces first Technical Gymnasium.

The Technical Junior High School (Technical Gymnasium) is being introduced into Cyprus’ education system for the first time on a pilot basis, announced Minister of Education Athina Michaelidou.

"We are implementing yet another commitment of the Government. The Technical Gymnasium is being introduced for the first time in our educational system as a pilot program. We are taking action to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in our country," stated Michaelidou in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

The Minister emphasized that the initiative provides students with early exposure to technical professions and the opportunity to explore new technologies.

According to her, the primary aim of the Technical Gymnasium is to familiarize students at an early stage with technical and vocational paths, while integrating practical skills and life competencies into their education. These skills will benefit them in the future regardless of their academic or professional direction.

“Students will gain hands-on knowledge and develop life and training skills that will serve them in the long run. They’ll also be able to identify their aptitudes and interests and better understand the world of work and production from a younger age,” Michaelidou explained.

She underscored that implementing this innovative education policy is a national necessity. "This is evidenced by the exceptionally low participation rates of junior high school graduates in Technical and Vocational Education and Training, as well as the significant skills mismatch observed between education outcomes and labor market demands."

The Minister concluded by saying: “We are investing in shaping a modern and effective school system, and in the holistic development of our children by giving them the opportunities they deserve.”
