NKUA in Cyprus: Where the Process Stands for the Operation of 7 Additional Departments
Accreditation advances as the University expands its presence in Nicosia and Larnaca.
Procedures are progressing for the operation of the remaining seven departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) branch in Cyprus, according to statements made to OffsiteNews by NKUA Executive Director Eleni Vasilopoulou.
She stated that, in the coming days, calls for expressions of interest for the new academic year are expected to be published for departments that have already received accreditation and will operate in Nicosia. At the same time, the accreditation process for departments planned to operate in Larnaca is expected to be completed.
It is recalled that during the current academic year, NKUA operated only the Medical School in Nicosia with 60 students, despite receiving more than 350 applications. The school is housed in the former EKATE building in Nicosia, while for laboratory purposes, the Archontariki and the “Eirini” Hall in the Ledra area are also being used.
The departments that will operate in Nicosia and Larnaca are as follows:
School of Health Sciences (Nicosia):
-
Department of Medicine
-
Department of Nursing
School of Economics and Political Sciences:
-
Department of Economics (Nicosia)
-
Department of Business Administration and Organisations (Nicosia)
-
Department of Port and Shipping Management (Larnaca)
Faculty of Philosophy:
-
Department of Psychology (Larnaca)
-
English-taught Undergraduate Programme: BA Program in the Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece (BAAG) (Nicosia)
School of Education Sciences (Nicosia):
-
Department of Primary Education
For the schools that will form the NKUA branch in Nicosia, a series of buildings within the walled city have been selected for use.
As previously mentioned, the Medical School is housed in the former EKATE building in Nicosia. For laboratory courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, and Histology–Embryology, the “Eirini” Hall in the Ledra area is being used.
The offices of the Rectorate and the University’s Governing Council will be housed at the Eleneion building. Meanwhile, the administration of the schools and departments will be located in a historic building in Faneromeni, following its concession by the Church of Cyprus.
Additional buildings to be utilised for housing schools of the NKUA branch in Nicosia include the Tarsi Arcade, at the end of Ledra Street’s pedestrian zone, as well as the Achilleios Library.
Finally, as reported in a previous OffsiteNews article, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras stated that the Departments of Psychology and Port and Shipping Management will be housed at the Social Welfare Multi-purpose Centre, formerly the Larnaca Community Centre.
It is also noted that on 3 November, new, state-of-the-art student residences were inaugurated on Voulgaroktonou, Arsinoes, and Komninou streets in Nicosia. The facilities comprise 50 rooms for NKUA Nicosia students and were designed in accordance with accessibility standards for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
The project was co-financed by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Facility – NextGenerationEU, within the framework of the “Cyprus – Tomorrow” plan.
