European Institute of Management and Finance and University of Cyprus Unite to Address Eurozone Banking Challenges

An event titled "Challenges in the Eurozone's Integrated Banking Sector" was jointly organized by the European Institute of Management and Finance (EIMF) and the School of Economics and Management at the University of Cyprus. The purpose of this event, held in Cyprus, was to mark the inaugural meeting of EIMF's Academic Council, which brought together esteemed international academics.

Adonis Pegasios, the Academic Director of EIMF, warmly welcomed the participants and underscored the caliber of the speakers. He expressed his hopes for a fruitful and enduring collaboration between the University of Cyprus and EIMF. Professor Sofronis Clerides, representing the Dean of the School of Economics and Management, extended a warm greeting. Additionally, Professor Andreas Milidonis, Chairman of the Department of Accounting and Finance, addressed the audience.

Marinos Lambrianides, Deputy Senior Director and Head of Supervision at the Central Bank of Cyprus, delivered a comprehensive presentation that provided insights into the latest developments at the European level, as well as the existing regulatory framework. He specifically focused on the challenges that arise at both the national and European levels.

Sustainability and crisis management

During his presentation titled "Fault Lines in Eurozone Governance: Overcoming History?," Professor Kevin Featherstone, a distinguished Professor of Political Science and Head of the Hellenic Observatory at the London School of Economics (LSE), analyzed the diverse approaches of member states regarding economic integration. He explored how these approaches manifest in the formation of intergovernmental agreements that shape the operations of the Eurozone, particularly with regard to the banking union.

Professor Yiannis Ioannou, a Strategy Professor at the London Business School, emphasized the importance of sustainability. He provided examples to illustrate the necessity and added value of organizations' efforts in meeting the positive criteria encompassed by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.

Christos Chatzimmanouil, a Professor in the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Law at the LSE, focused on the ongoing revision of the Crisis Management and Deposit Insurance Framework at the European level, shedding light on the implications and discussions surrounding this topic.

Lastly, Professor Andreas Milidonis, a Finance Professor at the University of Cyprus, delivered a presentation that explored the challenges and prospects faced by Cypriot banks in the current landscape. He provided a comparative analysis, drawing insights from other European countries.

The event was expertly moderated by Dr. Tatiana Falcao and Dr. Adonis Pegasios, ensuring a cohesive and engaging experience for all attendees.
