EU Backs 15 New Civil Society Projects Across Cyprus With Over €2 Million in Grants
The European Commission strengthens trust and cooperation in Cyprus by funding 15 civil society initiatives under its 9th grant programme
With over €2 million allocated through 15 new grants, the European Commission is supporting civil society organizations across Cyprus.
According to a statement by the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, the ninth grant programme titled "Cypriot Civil Society in Action" was launched in 2024. Its goal is to empower civil society in fostering trust, dialogue, cooperation, and promoting EU values and standards through actions that contribute to the reunification of Cyprus.
In June 2025, after reviewing 69 submitted applications, the European Commission awarded 15 grants exceeding €2 million under the "Cypriot Civil Society in Action" programme.
A total of 28 Cypriot civil society organizations are involved in the implementation of these projects, which will run over the next 15 to 30 months. Six of the projects are bi-communal, involving collaboration between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot organizations.
The projects address several key areas:
-
Environmental protection and sustainable development
-
Reconciliation, trust-building, and strengthening civil society participation in the peace process
-
Women’s empowerment and support for victims of gender-based violence
-
Youth rights advocacy
-
Health-related rights
-
Animal welfare
-
Creating an enabling environment for civil society organizations
Since 2007, approximately €23 million has been allocated in grants to civil society organizations through the EU’s Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.
