Police Mistakenly Arrest Visitor and Take Him to Court with Inmates
Authorities launch investigation after a civilian is mistakenly detained during prisoner transfer.
An incredible but true incident took place yesterday at the Central Prisons in Nicosia.
According to media reports, police officers mistakenly placed a visitor to the Central Prisons inside a police van and transported him to the Court of Appeal, believing he was one of the inmates.
The officers were in the process of transferring prisoners from the prison to the courts when, without conducting proper verification, they reportedly loaded a civilian into the van along with the convicts. Upon arriving at the courthouse, they realized that there was one person too many.
Sources indicate that the man tried to explain the misunderstanding, but in the rush of the transfer, no one appeared to pay attention.
Eventually, the police returned the man to the Central Prisons, where he had been mistakenly taken from, so he could finally return home.
At this stage, the Cyprus Police have only confirmed that the Chief of Police has requested a full report on the incident from the Nicosia Police Director.
