Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the significance of bolstering Cypriot and European shipping during an address at a dinner in his honor organized by the Cyprus Shipowners' Association in Athens.
President Christodoulides has submitted proposals to both UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The communications aim at enhancing the status of Cypriot shipping.
Cyprus boasts a distinguished shipping register, ranking 3rd in Europe and 11th globally. "A robust Cypriot register amplifies Cyprus' voice in shaping shipping policies," President Christodoulides remarked.
Moreover, he informed attendees of his correspondence with UN Secretary General Guterres concerning the potential reactivation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. He stressed the need for the UN to ensure equitable treatment for all grain-transporting vessels in the region and to counteract Turkey's adverse practices.
Additionally, a letter was sent to the President of the European Commission, emphasizing the paramount importance of shipping to the global economy. "Shipping immensely contributes to the EU's GDP and supports countless European families," the President highlighted.
Katerina Sakellaropoulou, President of the Hellenic Republic, underscored the deep-seated bond between Cyprus and Greece, particularly in the realm of shipping.
Andreas Hatzigiannis, President of the Cyprus Shipowners' Association, detailed the milestones and obstacles faced by Cypriot, Greek, and European shipping.
Furthermore, Mr. Hadjigiannis has pledged 50 million euros in financial aid to support those affected by the floods and fires in Greece.
