Mediterranean Tsunami Threat, a Real Concern for Cyprus

Geological Survey Department Highlights Tsunami Preparedness and Warning Systems

The Department of Geological Survey (DGS) warns that the danger of a tsunami in the Mediterranean is a real possibility. It notes that Cyprus' coasts have been affected by destructive tsunamis in the past, leading to deaths and the devastation of coastal towns and ports.

The DGS is actively participating in UNESCO's CoastWAVE program, coordinating national efforts for tsunami preparedness and readiness, particularly in the Larnaca Municipality. This initiative aims to integrate Larnaca into the global network of "Tsunami-Ready" communities.

On the occasion of the United Nations-designated World Tsunami Awareness Day on November 5th, the DGS emphasizes the day's purpose: to inform and sensitize the global community, especially those in coastal areas, about the catastrophic consequences of tsunamis.

The announcement underlines that tsunamis can have devastating impacts on both natural and built environments. It mentions the Mediterranean region's early warning system for tsunamis, of which Cyprus is a member state through a national committee chaired by the DGS.

The DGS concludes, "Despite the early warning systems and contingency plans in place, it's crucial for every individual to recognize natural signs of a potential tsunami, such as a strong or prolonged earthquake, or an unusual and rapid change in sea level. Recognizing these signs is vital for personal safety measures, including moving away from the coast or to higher altitudes."
