Apple Initiates Major Layoffs in California, Cutting 614 Jobs
Post-Pandemic Downsizing Marks First Significant Job Cuts at Apple’s Santa Clara Facilities
Apple is set to lay off 614 employees in California, marking the company's first significant job reductions following the pandemic. According to a report filed by the company under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the affected employees are stationed across eight different facilities in Santa Clara. They were officially notified of the cuts on March 28, with changes set to take effect on May 27.
Unlike its competitors, Apple has not been forced to shrink its workforce to the same extent, primarily because the tech giant expanded more slowly during the pandemic. This report comes just weeks after Apple canceled a long-term project to build an electric, autonomous vehicle by its Special Projects Group. Having invested millions of dollars and over a decade in the Apple Car project, the company ultimately concluded that it was not feasible.
While the Apple announcement did not specify the particular projects affected by the job cuts, none of the locations mentioned in the filing are at the company’s main campus in Cupertino. Instead, these are smaller, satellite offices likely hosting secretive research projects.
As of now, Apple representatives have not commented on the matter.
