Cyprus Trade Deficit Shrinks by €708 Million in January-April

Significant Reduction in Imports Drives Down Trade Deficit

The trade deficit decreased by €708 million during the period of January-April 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, driven by a significant reduction in imports by 18.4%.

Specifically, according to the Statistical Service, the trade deficit for January-April 2024 was €2.453 billion, compared to €3.161 billion for the same period in 2023.

Total imports of goods for January-April 2024 amounted to €3.620 billion, compared to €4.435 billion for January-April 2023, marking an 18.4% decrease.

Total exports of goods for January-April 2024 were €1.167 billion, compared to €1.274 billion for January-April 2023, showing a decrease of 8.4%.

Preliminary April 2024 Data

According to the Statistical Service, total imports of goods in April 2024 were €1.094 billion, compared to €915.5 million in April 2023, recording an increase of 19.5%.

Imports from other EU member states were €648.4 million and from third countries €445.7 million, compared to €573.1 million and €342.3 million, respectively, in April 2023.

April 2024 imports included the transfer of economic ownership of ships and aircraft, totaling €155.6 million compared to €100.3 million in April 2023.

Additionally, according to the Statistical Service, total exports of goods in April 2024 were €351.0 million, compared to €323.3 million in April 2023, marking an increase of 8.6%.

Exports to other EU member states were €108.6 million and to third countries €242.5 million, compared to €90.2 million and €233.1 million, respectively, in April 2023.

April 2024 exports included the transfer of economic ownership of ships, totaling €38.3 million compared to €122.6 million in April 2023.

Final March 2024 Data

Moreover, according to the Statistical Service, total imports of goods were €816.8 million in March 2024, compared to €1.014 billion in March 2023, showing a decrease of 19.5%.

Exports of domestically produced goods, including supplies for ships and aircraft, were €150.1 million in March 2024, compared to €163.4 million in March 2023, recording a decrease of 8.1%.

The value of exports of industrial products for March 2024 was €139.5 million compared to €152.4 million in March 2023, while the value of agricultural product exports for March 2024 was €9.8 million compared to €10.1 million in March 2023.

Exports of foreign products, including supplies for ships and aircraft, were €110.9 million in March 2024, compared to €211.4 million in March 2023, marking a decrease of 47.5%.
