Only 36,000 Downloads for Cyprus' Digital Citizen App

Nikodimos Damianou urges broader adoption following interoperability launch between Cyprus and Greece’s digital wallets.

Only 36,000 citizens have downloaded the Digital Citizen app to their smartphones, according to Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nikodimos Damianou, who described the figure as unsatisfactory.

Speaking on Proino Dromologio, Damianou referred to the joint press conference held the previous day at the Presidential Palace with Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou. During the event, the two countries officially announced interoperability between their respective digital wallets—Psifiakos Politis in Cyprus and Gov.gr Wallet in Greece.

For the effort to succeed, Damianou stressed, all public and private entities must accept the digital documents, which are certified digital replicas of official documents.

In its initial phase, the interoperability allows for mutual recognition and verification of digital identity cards and driving licenses across both Cyprus and Greece.

The next step, according to the Deputy Minister, will be the integration of the Fan Card into the digital wallet system.
