New Connectivity Hub in Geroskipou to Strengthen Cyprus’ Digital Infrastructure

Cyta and Sparkle Sign Agreement for BlueMed Submarine Cable Branch to Cyprus

Cyta and Sparkle have signed an agreement for a branch of the BlueMed submarine cable, which will land at Cyta's landing station in Geroskipou, Cyprus. The agreement was finalized during the Capacity Middle East conference in Dubai and is set to enhance connectivity between Cyprus, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries.

BlueMed is Sparkle’s latest submarine cable system, connecting Italy, France, Greece, and multiple Mediterranean nations. It forms part of the Blue & Raman systems, developed in collaboration with Google and other providers, extending connectivity as far as Mumbai, India.

With four fiber optic pairs and an initial design capacity of over 25 Terabits per second (Tbps) per pair, BlueMed offers high-speed, reliable connectivity to meet the growing digital demands of interconnected countries.

Strategic Importance of the Cyprus Landing

Under the agreement, Sparkle will establish a BlueMed branch that will land at Cyta’s station in Geroskipou. Cyta will utilize one of BlueMed’s fiber pairs to enhance Cyprus’ connectivity with Greece and other Mediterranean regions.

The BlueMed landing in Cyprus will boost Cyta’s capacity to meet the increasing demand for advanced internet services and digital content, offering higher data speeds, more reliable connectivity, and enhanced digital experiences for businesses, organizations, and households.

“We are very pleased with our collaboration with Cyta, reaffirming our commitment to strengthening connectivity in the Mediterranean,” said Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle. “With the upcoming landing in Cyprus, we are adding another key hub to the BlueMed route.”

George Metzakis, Chief Commercial Officer of Cyta, added: “This partnership reinforces our long-standing relationship with Sparkle and highlights Cyprus’ strategic role as a regional connectivity hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. The BlueMed connection further strengthens Cyprus’ digital ecosystem.”

The BlueMed landing in Geroskipou will complement the existing connection between Pentaskhinos (Cyprus) and Chania (Greece), currently supported by the MedNautilus submarine cable system. This development will provide additional, alternative routes for enhanced connectivity between Cyprus and Greece, further improving network resilience and performance.
