Cyprus Plans to Develop Its Own Drones and Software for the National Guard

The development of Cyprus' defense industry will take place in phases to reduce reliance on foreign markets for weapons procurement.

Cyprus is making a decisive move into the defense industry, aiming to establish a national identity in weapons systems. Evaluating its capabilities, Cyprus plans to focus on developing software systems, drones, and military equipment based on the financial and operational capacities of the National Guard.

As Offsite reports, the development of Cyprus' defense industry will take place in phases to reduce reliance on foreign markets for weapons procurement. However, market trends abroad will also be monitored to integrate relevant advancements into the Cypriot sector.

To facilitate this effort, the Cyprus Defense Industry Council (CDIC) was established following a decision by the Council of Ministers on January 15, 2025. Currently, multiple companies across Cyprus are capable of producing equipment that contributes to the country’s military procurement programs.

Briefing the President and Future Plans

On February 25, 2025, the Cyprus Defense Industry Council briefed President Nikos Christodoulides on the state and potential of the domestic defense industry.

During the meeting, the President was updated on ongoing and planned initiatives aimed at strengthening the Cypriot defense industry. He also listened to proposals from Council members on how to align the sector with national defense and security objectives.

The Council has committed to developing a comprehensive policy framework to bolster Cyprus' defense industry, ensuring its sustainability and competitiveness in both the medium and long term.
