EuroBasket 2025 as a Legacy for the Future
By Andreas Mouzouridis, President of the Cyprus Basketball Federation.
Cyprus made history. With the completion of the Group C games of FIBA EuroBasket 2025, our country found itself for the first time at the heart of Europe’s premier basketball competition, proving that it has the vision, the infrastructure, and the determination to host events that go far beyond the boundaries of sport and highlight its true potential.
The success of this tournament was the result of years of strategy, systematic work, and collective dedication. From the moment Cyprus accepted the challenge until the first tip-off at the renovated, now international-standard Spyros Kyprianou Arena, our Federation, in close collaboration with the State and institutions, worked methodically, with planning and determination, so that every detail reflected our country’s ability and seriousness. The trust FIBA placed in Cyprus was recognition of this consistency and professionalism. The outcome fully rewarded everyone who contributed, proving that Cyprus can successfully meet the demands of international events.
The image Cyprus presented to Europe and the world was impressive and worthy of the highest expectations. Packed arenas, flawless organization, and fans who turned every game into a celebration, highlighted our country as a destination capable of hosting events of the highest level. The young people who stood next to international stars, society’s unprecedented engagement with basketball, and the images broadcast across Europe strengthened Cyprus’ identity as a point of reference not only in sport but also in culture, tourism, and international visibility. The moment of the national anthem before the game against Greece, the sold-out matches, and the unstoppable energy in the stands will remain indelible memories, establishing Cyprus as a place that knows how to turn sport into a life experience and leave a legacy of pride for future generations.
Everyone who contributed played a decisive role in this journey. The Government consistently supported the effort, sponsors believed in and invested in the vision, institutions cooperated harmoniously, while the partners and the team of the Cyprus Basketball Federation worked with dedication, professionalism, and attention to detail. Volunteers gave their time, energy, and smiles, embodying the heartbeat of the tournament. Above all, society embraced EuroBasket, filling the stands with thousands of fans who sent the clearest message: sports in Cyprus have deep roots, a solid foundation, and a bright future.
The legacy of the tournament is multifaceted and long-term. On the level of infrastructure, the Spyros Kyprianou Arena has been established as a modern jewel of Cypriot sport, ready to host international contests. On the level of know-how, the experience gained by the people of the Federation and our partners has created a valuable asset for future challenges. On the level of society, the spark ignited among the younger generation may well be the most important legacy: children inspired by basketball at its highest form, discovering the game, and envisioning their own future through sports.
The momentum created opens new horizons. The Cyprus Basketball Federation has a clear and ambitious vision: strengthening academies, supporting and promoting national teams, hosting more international tournaments, tapping into the potential of sports tourism, and deepening collaboration with the State and institutions. The goal is a Cypriot basketball that is modern, professional, outward-looking, capable of inspiring, uniting, and claiming its rightful place on the European and international map.
EuroBasket showcased Cyprus as a reliable and capable partner in the international sporting community. It proved that our country can rise to the demands of high-level events and transform them into strategic opportunities for growth and global visibility. This strengthens Cyprus’s reputation and prestige far beyond sport itself.
With the conclusion of EuroBasket 2025, Germany rose to the top of Europe and deserves the warmest congratulations for its performance and achievement. For us Cypriots, however, particular significance lies in Greece’s great success in winning the bronze medal and rightfully standing on the podium. A distinction that filled the entire Hellenic world with pride and deeply moved us all. We had the honor of experiencing the journey of the Greek National Team up close, from the qualifiers hosted in Cyprus; perhaps our country even served as the good luck charm needed for this remarkable result. It was a joy and an honor for all of Cyprus, inside and outside the Spyros Kyprianou Arena, to share this journey, living through moments that further strengthened the bonds of Hellenism and highlighted basketball as a common source of pride and inspiration.
For me personally, as President of the Cyprus Basketball Federation, this experience represents a milestone in my journey. It confirms that collective effort, vision, and cooperation have the power to fulfill the most ambitious expectations. EuroBasket 2025 is not the closing of a chapter; it is the beginning of a new era. An era built with strategy, synergy, and faith in our abilities, with the goal of a basketball that will continue to inspire, to unite, and to lead Cyprus to even greater successes.
