“The More We Connect, The More We Achieve” – Memnia Papadopoulou on Legal Collaboration in Tech
Head of Legal at SPORTSOFT on leading TechIsland’s Legal Community, bridging law and technology, and positioning Cyprus as a hub for legal innovation.
When Cyprus’ tech sector is growing rapidly, the legal profession can no longer afford to operate in silos. Memnia Papadopoulou, Head of Legal at SPORTSOFT, has stepped into an important new role as Community Leader of TechIsland’s recently launched Legal Community — a network designed to unite lawyers, legal advisors, and compliance officers working in tech.
In this interview, she shares her vision for a vibrant, knowledge-driven community, the challenges of keeping pace with rapid regulatory change, and why legal teams must become co-architects of Cyprus’ tech-driven future.
The launch of the TechIsland Legal Community came at exactly the right time. As Cyprus continues to grow as a hub for tech, fintech, and innovation, the legal industry is being called to evolve alongside it. When TechIsland invited professionals from across the ecosystem to shape this new initiative, I was honored to contribute and take on a leadership role.
What motivated me most was the opportunity to help build a space where legal and compliance professionals working in tech can connect on a deeper level — not just for networking, but for open dialogue, problem-solving, and practical support among legal professionals who understand the pressures of the tech landscape.
I truly believe that by strengthening ties across the legal side of tech, we can elevate the entire ecosystem
My vision is to see the Legal Community evolve into a vibrant, go-to resource for continuous learning, knowledge-sharing, and peer collaboration. Whether you're an in-house counsel or an external advisor, this is a space where you can collectively grow and stay ahead of the curve.
I truly believe that by strengthening ties across the legal side of tech, we can elevate the entire ecosystem — and help position Cyprus not only as a tech destination but also as a leader in legal and regulatory matters in the region.
The Legal Community was created in response to a real and growing need — as Cyprus’ tech industry expands, the legal questions we face are becoming more complex, more urgent, and more industry-specific. The main goal of the TechIsland Legal Community is to build a dedicated space where legal professionals can connect, collaborate, and confidently navigate evolving legal and regulatory landscapes together.
One of our core priorities is to bridge the gap between legal teams and the broader tech ecosystem. By fostering stronger collaboration between in-house counsel and external law firms, we aim to raise the standard of legal support — moving beyond basic compliance and toward a more strategic, business-aligned approach.
We also aim to raise the bar. In fast-moving sectors like tech, legal support can sometimes focus solely on ticking the boxes. Through this community, we want to move beyond baseline standards and foster a culture of excellence — one that encourages creative thinking, proactive solutions, and legal strategies that truly support innovation.
In the long term, we hope this community will not only elevate the practice of law within Cyprus' tech sector but help position the island as a hub for legal innovation in the region. This isn’t just about keeping pace with change — it’s about leading it, together.
Legal professionals in Cyprus are navigating a period of immense transformation. As the tech sector grows rapidly, we’re seeing an increased need to keep pace with international regulatory trends — from data privacy and AI governance to fintech and ESG requirements. At the same time, many legal teams here are still adapting to more modern, tech-enabled ways of working, which can make it hard to meet the fast-evolving needs of startups and scaleups.
The more we connect, the more we amplify our collective impact — strengthening not just individual practice, but the legal ecosystem as a whole
Another major challenge is fragmentation. Many legal professionals in Cyprus still work quite independently — whether in firms or in-house — without a shared platform for open dialogue or peer learning. That can lead to duplicated efforts, slower problem-solving, and missed opportunities to raise the overall standard of legal support across the industry.
That’s exactly where the Legal Community — and its leadership group — hopes to make a difference. By fostering a collaborative network, we’re creating opportunities for peer learning, mentoring, and open discussion. The more we connect, the more we amplify our collective impact — strengthening not just individual practice, but the legal ecosystem as a whole.
The Legal Community is as much about connection as it is about content. One of our top priorities is to create spaces where legal professionals feel supported, informed, and inspired.
The Community has already launched a dedicated Telegram group, where members can crowdsource answers, exchange resources, and have quick, open conversations on day-to-day issues. It’s become a lively space for real-time support.
Beyond that, a series of in-person meetups is being rolled out. These events will feature panel discussions, expert talks, and peer-led sessions on timely topics. We’re keeping the atmosphere informal and inclusive to encourage genuine conversation.
Looking ahead, we’re exploring long-term initiatives like mentorship programmes and working groups that cut across companies and specialisations.
The legal community plays a crucial role in Cyprus’ tech evolution — not just by interpreting rules, but by helping shape a future where innovation and compliance go hand in hand. As more companies set up and scale here, the demand for agile, strategic legal guidance is increasing rapidly.
We’re being asked to do more than protect businesses — we’re helping them grow responsibly, navigate global markets, and respond to regulatory change with confidence. I believe this positions legal professionals as enablers of innovation, not barriers to it.
To fulfil that role, our community must keep evolving. That means embracing legaltech, building deeper specialisation in emerging areas like AI and fintech, and advocating for a regulatory environment that balances growth with governance.
The Legal Community can be a key driver of that evolution. Through shared knowledge and collaboration, we can help ensure that Cyprus becomes known not just for its tech companies, but for the high-calibre legal infrastructure that supports them. In this way, legal professionals become co-architects of the country’s tech-driven future.
At SPORTSOFT, legal is deeply integrated into the business. My role extends beyond managing contracts and compliance checklists — it's about aligning legal strategy with company growth, ensuring we scale responsibly while remaining competitive.
In a high-performance environment like ours, legal risk isn’t something to avoid at all costs — it’s something to understand and manage strategically. The goal is to create clarity: knowing where we can be flexible, and where we need to draw firm boundaries. That only works when legal is closely connected to every part of the organisation — product, marketing, finance, operations — so that decisions are made in context.
Legal risk isn’t something to avoid at all costs — it’s something to understand and manage strategically.
I also focus on building a culture where legal isn’t seen as a blocker, but as a partner. That means being proactive, translating complex legal issues into simple, actionable guidance, and embedding legal thinking early in the decision-making process.
Ultimately, it’s about enabling the company to move fast, but smart — with legal infrastructure that supports innovation and protects long-term value.
