New Adjournment in Cyprus Passport Case Involving Former Minister Marios Demetriades

Hearing Rescheduled to May 21 as Defense Awaits Voluminous Evidence

The proceedings regarding the Cyprus naturalization case, which involves former Minister of Transport Marios Demetriades and other individuals, have been adjourned once again to May 21.

The case was scheduled for hearing this morning before the Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia for the defendants to respond to the charges against them.

A total of ten defendants—eight individuals and two legal entities—face 59 charges, including influence peddling, bribery, acceptance of bribes, conspiracy to defraud, money laundering, and breach of the Council of Europe Convention on the Criminalization of Corruption.

Alongside Mr. Demetriades, the accused include Andreas Demetriades, Dimitris Demetriades, Giorgos Demetriades, Eleni Simillidi, Jing Wang, Josef Friedrich Santin, Vasiliki Georgiou-Santin, the firm Andreas Demetriades & Co LLC, and Delsk (Cyprus) Business Services Ltd.

During today’s proceedings, the representative of the Prosecution requested an additional two weeks to deliver the requested evidentiary material to the defense, noting that the material is “extremely voluminous.”

The defense lawyers agreed to the Prosecution’s request for an adjournment, to allow sufficient time to review the additional evidence, which reportedly includes telecommunications data and witness testimonies.

The Court approved the request and set the next hearing for May 21 at 9:30 a.m.
