Charalambos Charalambous Resigns Following Mounting Pressure

Says decision aims to protect institutions, the government, and the Republic.

Charalambos Charalambous has submitted his resignation from the position of Director of the Office of the President of the Republic, citing transparency and the need to protect the President, the government, and the Republic of Cyprus amid mounting political pressure.

In a public statement posted on social media, Charalambous said his participation in the government was never driven by political ambition but was a conscious decision to contribute to what he described as an ambitious programme of governance aimed at strengthening institutions and advancing Cypriot society.

Referring to recent developments, Charalambous spoke of a targeted attempt to personally harm President Nikos Christodoulides, undermine the government, and damage the country’s image. He said his own involvement had been exploited through selective excerpts and references taken out of context, leading to misleading conclusions.

According to Charalambous, this approach undermines trust in institutions and ignores the factual framework that will emerge through lawful procedures. He confirmed that he gave testimony yesterday, stating what he described as the truth and clarifying the real context of the references attributed to him.

Charalambous stressed that he would not accept any shadow being cast over his integrity or his intention to serve the country. He added that he would also not allow his continued presence in the government to be used as a tool to harm either the President or the Republic of Cyprus.

“For this reason,” he stated, “I have submitted my resignation from the position of Director of the Office of the President of the Republic.”

Describing his decision as a matter of duty, Charalambous said that his foremost responsibility is the protection of the country, the government, and the President, particularly at a time when Cyprus requires stability, credibility, and clear political discourse.

He explained that his resignation aims to prevent his role from continuing to be instrumentalised against national objectives and the broader collective effort.

At the same time, he called on all institutions of the Republic to act toward restoring the truth, which he said would reveal the malicious intent behind what he described as an orchestrated attack.

Charalambous said he leaves his post with a sense of pride for what has been achieved over the past three years, attributing this to the hard, systematic work of the President and the government. He expressed confidence that this course will continue, strengthening Cyprus’ international standing and advancing national goals.

He concluded his statement by stressing that, above all, his priority remains the country itself.
