European Commission Questioned Over Alleged Corruption Video in Cyprus

MEP Sandro Gozi says the issue goes beyond national borders.

A question to the European Commission regarding a video referring to alleged corruption scandals in Cyprus has been submitted by MEP and Secretary General of the European Democratic Party (EDP), Sandro Gozi. He stressed that the issue is not merely a national matter, but one that requires European oversight to ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in EU decision-making, particularly in relation to sanctions and strategic investments.

In a statement, the European Democratic Party notes that the “video that leaked in Cyprus raises serious concerns about how power is exercised at the highest levels of the state.”

According to the statement, the content of the video reportedly refers to illegal financing of election campaigns, influence-peddling linked to foreign investors, and even attempts to influence the EU sanctions regime. “The allegations involve individuals from the President’s close circle, as well as strategic infrastructure projects that are already under investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office,” it adds.

It is further noted that Odysseas Michaelides, head of the ALMA Movement, which participates in the EDP, warns that these revelations strike at the core of the rule of law, pointing to the existence of a system in which political access, permits, and ‘donations’ appear to be dangerously interconnected.

“For the EDP and Sandro Gozi, who has submitted a parliamentary question to the European Commission, this issue is not simply national. Europe has a responsibility to raise clear questions and ensure transparency, accountability, and integrity in the European decision-making process—especially when sanctions and strategic investments are at stake,” the statement concludes.
