A First 'Victory' Against the Law Threatening Press Freedom in Cyprus

The Ministry of Justice and Public Order has scheduled a broad meeting to discuss and reassess the content of the bill titled "The Criminal Code (Amendment) Law of 2021." This meeting, planned days in advance, responds to the concerns of stakeholders and other parties.

In its announcement regarding reports in the press and on social media about the bill regulating the sending and posting of text with false, blatantly offensive, obscene, indecent, or threatening content, the Ministry stated that, besides its officials, representatives from the Legal Service of the Republic, the Cyprus Bar Association, and broader journalism sectors were invited to participate.

"The Ministry of Justice and Public Order, recognizing the concerns of involved parties and others, had already scheduled, before today's postings came to light, a broad meeting at the Ministry to discuss and reassess the content of the bill titled 'The Criminal Code (Amendment) (No. 3) Law of 2021,'" the announcement states.
