In Kyiv, Christodoulides Outlines Cyprus’ 2026 EU Presidency Priorities for Ukraine

Talks highlight EU accession, sanctions enforcement and expanded cooperation.

President Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Kyiv on Thursday for a working visit ahead of Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency in 2026, where he was received by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and reinforce Nicosia’s commitment to Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis described the trip as “deeply symbolic”, stressing that Cyprus’ solidarity is rooted in its own experience of invasion and occupation. He highlighted Cyprus’ dedication to the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, as well as to diplomatic efforts for a just and lasting peace.

Christodoulides presented 19 proposals that Cyprus plans to promote during its EU Presidency, including an informal Foreign Affairs Council in Kyiv, EU working-group meetings in Ukraine, raising the issue of abducted Ukrainian children, and invitations for Zelensky to upcoming EU-related events in Cyprus.

Discussions also focused on Ukraine’s EU accession path, with Nicosia stressing that enlargement will be a top priority in 2026.

The Cypriot President raised concerns over sanctions circumvention by Turkish companies, presenting evidence to Zelensky and urging coordinated pressure to ensure sanctions remain effective. He also addressed the inclusion of Cypriot citizens and companies on Ukraine’s sanctions list, seeking clarification.

Christodoulides received updates on the security situation and recent diplomatic contacts, and held additional meetings with Ukrainian parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Julie Davis. His programme also include visits to the Wall of Heroes and a rehabilitation centre for children returning from captivity.
