Cyprus Police Investigate Alleged Assault by Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos
Authorities also probing leak of sensitive personal data linked to the case.
Cyprus Police have launched an ex officio investigation into allegations that a mayor assaulted his wife, with reliable sources identifying the individual as Paphos Mayor Phedon Phedonos. The case had sparked widespread public reaction following the circulation of hospital documents on social media.
Speaking on the state broadcaster RIK’s morning programme “Proti Enimerosi”, Christodoulos Konsolos, spokesperson for the Police Press Office, confirmed that the investigation is already underway. He stressed that authorities are acting independently of any formal complaint.
“If evidence emerges that helps clarify the situation, even partially, we will come forward and announce the findings,” Konsolos said.
According to Konsolos, police are currently collecting and evaluating information to determine whether any criminal offences may have been committed and what steps should follow.
The same position was reiterated in statements made to Politis radio, where Konsolos explained that the investigation concerns two parallel issues:
-
the alleged incident of domestic violence involving a serving mayor, and
-
the unauthorised disclosure of official documents containing sensitive personal information.
