Sex for Work? Channel 4 Exposes Dark Side of Ayia Napa Jobs

Undercover investigation reveals allegations of exploitation, illegal employment, and sexual harassment.

Reports of deplorable employment and housing conditions, as well as incidents of sexual harassment against young British women who travel to Ayia Napa to work through a specific agency, are featured in a documentary broadcast by Channel 4.

Speaking on the radio programme Proino Dromologio, Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanettou did not rule out the existence of such isolated incidents, stressing, however, that they do not reflect the overall picture of the area. He noted that Ayia Napa is an international tourist destination, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

The Mayor underlined that communication will take place with the Minister of Justice and Public Order as well as the Chief of Police, in order to investigate which individual businesses may be operating illegally and to ensure that appropriate measures are taken.

He added that the Municipality of Ayia Napa will also take steps to identify unsuitable premises where seasonal workers are being housed, so that formal complaints can be filed and the matter addressed.

An undercover Channel 4 journalist travelled to Cyprus as part of the investigation and used hidden cameras to document events taking place in the area.

In the documentary, she states—among other things—that owners of nightclubs in Ayia Napa offered her employment in exchange for sexual favours.

She further reports that, in many cases, young women from the United Kingdom are paid very low wages, often without knowing they are being employed illegally, and are subjected to threats.

The journalist also notes that similar incidents occur in other parts of Europe.
