Is the Troodos Forest at Risk from the Limassol Wildfires?
Flames Threaten the Forest as Villages Evacuate
Intense wildfire reignitions that began in Koilani have escalated and are now spreading rapidly toward the Mandria area, according to Renos Moiseos, the community leader of Mandria.
Mr. Moiseos reported that a new active fire front is currently developing in Mandria, posing a serious threat to the Troodos forest.
The northern side of Koilani is being evacuated as a precaution, while 15 homes in the community have already been destroyed by the fire.
Significant fire resurgence has also been recorded in the village of Arsos.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Elias Ioakeim, President of the Arsos Community Development Association, explained that the flare-up originated from remnants of the large wildfire that struck the semi-mountainous Limassol area yesterday. The flames are now burning east of Arsos, near the borders with Vasa and Koilani, and are advancing toward the Laona ridge.
He highlighted the strong and early presence of firefighting forces in the area, describing the deployment as an "impressive number of firefighting units."
Although small fire sources persisted overnight, the spread of the blaze toward the village of Arsos was successfully prevented.
Power outages have affected Arsos since yesterday, but a generator was transported to the village today to meet residents' basic energy needs. Ioakeim confirmed that locals remain in the village and are currently not in immediate danger.
