UN Envoy Holguín Arrives in Cyprus for Key Meetings with Leaders

Separate talks with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar set the stage for UN General Assembly discussions.

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, arrives in Cyprus tonight for a series of crucial meetings aimed at moving forward the Cyprus talks. She is scheduled to hold separate discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

The meeting with President Christodoulides is set for Friday at noon, while, according to the United Nations, her meeting with Mr. Tatar will take place on September 15.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated in New York that during her stay on the island, Holguín is expected to meet not only with the representatives of both leaders but also with other key stakeholders.

In his statements, President Christodoulides expressed readiness for his upcoming meeting with the UN envoy, noting: “We have some specific ideas on how to move forward.”

He emphasized the importance of Holguín’s visit to Cyprus ahead of the UN General Assembly, during which he is expected to meet with Secretary-General António Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Tatar.

Christodoulides also underlined that although Holguín had previously been forced to postpone her visit for personal reasons, her arrival now—despite the limited timeframe—signals the UN Secretary-General’s political will for progress. This, he said, concerns both the implementation of already agreed steps and the broader goal of restarting negotiations.

“We are ready for this meeting,” the President stressed, reiterating that Cyprus has concrete proposals both on agreed measures and on ways forward. “The most important thing,” he added, “is implementation.”
