Unions Unite for Peace: Greek and Turkish Cypriots Mark Global Day of Trade Union Action
Trade unions and peace initiatives held a symbolic event in the buffer zone, calling for reunification, peace, and an end to wars.
With a symbolic and dynamic event at the Home for Cooperation, the unions PEO, KTAMS, DEV-IS, KTOS, KTOEOS, KOOP-SEN, DAU-SEN, BES, and the bicommunal peace initiative United Cyprus marked the Global Day of Trade Union Action for Peace on Monday, September 1. Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot workers joined their voices to send a strong message in favor of peace and the reunification of Cyprus.
The event, held in the heart of the buffer zone, included the reading of a joint declaration highlighting the urgent need for a solution to the Cyprus problem and denouncing imperialist wars. A cultural program followed, featuring renowned artists Koullis Theodorou and Umut Albayrak, who musically united the two communities. Earlier the same day, the organizers delivered a resolution to the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.
In their joint declaration, the organizations condemned "the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people," expressing solidarity and demanding an end to the violence. At the same time, they firmly rejected any involvement of Cyprus in military operations and its transformation into a NATO outpost.
On the Cyprus issue, the organizations stressed that the current status quo is both dangerous and unacceptable. They reaffirmed their commitment to the common struggle for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were suspended in Crans-Montana, based on the Guterres Framework, with the aim of achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, for a demilitarized and independent state for all Cypriots.
The event concluded with participants renewing their commitment to common struggles under the slogan: “Peace in Cyprus, Peace in our Region, Peace in the World!”
