Verdict Date Set in Cyprus Golden Passports Scandal
Court to rule on Syllouris and Giovanis in February 2026.
The curtain is set to fall on the high-profile criminal case linked both to the Al Jazeera investigative report and to events surrounding the exceptional naturalisation of foreign investors and businesspeople, based on the findings of the Myron Nicolatos Commission.
The Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia will announce its verdict on 17 February 2026, ruling on the guilt or innocence of the accused: former House Speaker Demetris Syllouris and former MP and businessman Christakis Giovanis.
The defendants face charges of corruption and abuse of power, with the prosecution alleging that both Syllouris and Giovanis used their positions and influence to interfere with procedures for the naturalisation of investors. According to the prosecution, the cases under examination involved exceptional naturalisations or irregular practices.
According to the indictment, the accused are, among other things, charged with conspiracy to defraud the Republic, influencing a public official, and intervening in naturalisation procedures.
