46 Days Left for Cyprus Prepaid SIM Users to Verify — or Lose Numbers

Low compliance rates raise concerns as prepaid SIM card holders face November deadline for mandatory identification.

Just 46 days remain before the deadline given to thousands of prepaid SIM card users to complete their identification through mobile network providers in order to avoid losing their numbers. However, despite announcements, reminder emails, and awareness campaigns by telecom companies, users show little interest in complying with the required verification.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Marinos Moushiouttas, speaking to OffsiteNews, once again urged prepaid SIM card holders to proceed immediately with the identification process.

“I appeal once again to prepaid mobile card users to verify their SIM cards,” Moushiouttas said.

Particular concern exists for those who use prepaid SIM cards in security systems, alarm systems, and elevators. According to Moushiouttas, failure to complete identification on time could put lives at risk. “It is a shame, given that we all understand the need for card identification, to allow negligence to endanger lives,” he stressed.

According to the bill passed by Parliament in April 2024, prepaid SIM card users must complete identification of their details by November 10, otherwise they will lose their numbers. Parliament granted mobile providers an 18-month period to inform the public and complete the process with their customers.

OffsiteNews, in previous reporting, requested data from all four mobile operators (Cyta, Epic, PrimeTel, and Cablenet) regarding the number of prepaid SIM customers and how many have completed verification.

Only Cyta responded, with spokesperson Lefteris Christou confirming that the company has 230,000 prepaid SIM card holders, but only around 20% have completed the identification process.
