AI, Supercomputer, Digitalization and Social Media: Christodoulides’ Announcements

The new digital services and technological infrastructures announced

Priority 3 of the Official Governance Program for 2026, presented this evening by Nikos Christodoulides, focuses on the modernization of the state, reforms, and digital transformation, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and digital services.

Digital Services, “Digital Citizen,” and Information Systems

Building on services already available digitally, the introduction of more than 100 new digital services is planned for 2026. At the same time, new information systems are being implemented at the Social Insurance Department, the Road Transport Department, and the Police.

The “Digital Citizen” application is also being upgraded and currently serves more than 135,000 citizens. New features include, among others, the purchase of tickets for sports events and the issuance of a child’s identity card, expanding the range of everyday transactions with the state.

Artificial Intelligence, AI Factory, and National Supercomputer

In the field of artificial intelligence, the implementation of an action plan was announced, with the immediate launch of the first Cypriot AI Factory. This infrastructure will provide access to supercomputing power, aiming to support research, innovation, and data-intensive applications.

At the same time, the creation of a national supercomputer is being promoted, in cooperation with an American technology group. This initiative forms part of the strategy to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem, with potential applications in areas such as scientific research, fintech, healthtech, and startups.

Protection of Minors From Social Media

Special reference was also made to the safe use of social media by minors. The President of the Republic noted that the issue is of significant concern to society and announced the preparation of an Action Plan, in cooperation with partners in the European Union.

Within this framework, the use of an age-verification application is being examined, with the aim of strengthening the protection of children online, in line with European guidelines.
