Cyprus to Introduce Digital Match Tickets Following Fan Card Integration

New system links fan identity with ticket access to curb hooliganism and boost security at sports venues.

Cyprus has launched a fully digital version of the Fan Card (Κάρτα Φιλάθλου), now available through the Digital Citizen app. The Fan Card is mandatory for Cypriots aged 18 and above who wish to attend top-tier sporting events.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis highlighted that the new digital system improves security by verifying user identities through the national CY Login platform. More than 1,000 citizens registered their cards within the first 24 hours of the rollout, which began on June 2, 2025.

E-Tickets and Full Integration Coming Next

The launch will soon be followed by a digital match ticket system, currently being developed by the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation. The system will be directly linked to the fan card—without both, entry into stadiums will be denied.

Deputy Minister Dr. Nikodimos Damianou said the goal is full identification of spectators to reduce violent incidents. “This system will allow real-time detection of banned individuals,” he explained, adding that it would significantly assist police in preventing trouble before it begins.

The new fan card is valid for three years and is issued free of charge. It applies to all first-division sports matches and European competitions, while its use at friendly games will depend on police recommendations. Minors aged 14 and above are also eligible, with re-issuance required once they turn 18.

The digital format enhances law enforcement’s ability to monitor stadiums. When combined with surveillance cameras and turnstiles already installed at major venues like GSP, AEK Arena, and the new Limassol stadium, the card enables real-time identification—even of partially disguised individuals.
