Cyprus Joins European Space Agency as Associate Member
The new status paves the way for greater innovation, competitiveness, and investment in the national space sector.
Cyprus took a significant step today in strengthening its position on the European and international space map with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) for its transition to Associate Member status.
According to a statement from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, “This is a development of pivotal importance that reflects the strength and potential of the national ecosystem in the space sector, opening up new opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and growth.”
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Dr. Nikodimos Damianou, and on behalf of ESA by Director General Josef Aschbacher, during an official ceremony at the ESA headquarters in Paris. Delegations from all member states of the Agency were present.
Cyprus’s admission as an Associate Member was unanimously approved by all ESA member states, reflecting trust and recognition of the progress achieved in the country’s space sector.
The new status will allow Cyprus to expand and strengthen its national space ecosystem by leveraging ESA’s mechanisms and programmes. This is expected to enhance the competitiveness and international outreach of the country’s space sector—key pillars of the National Space Strategy—while increasing Cyprus’s attractiveness for investments and European funding.
Deputy Minister Dr. Damianou stated, “Today marks a milestone for Cyprus and highlights our readiness to play an active and meaningful role in the European space ecosystem. Cyprus’s geostrategic and upgraded geopolitical position enhances our ability to act as a reliable and secure hub for global space activities.”
He added, “As Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, space-related issues are placed at the core of our digital agenda, as a key pillar of Europe’s development, competitiveness, and strategic autonomy. Our priority is to strengthen cooperation among countries in this critical field and to promote policies that transform Europe’s space ambitions into tangible benefits for citizens and the economy.”
In his remarks, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher congratulated the Deputy Minister and the Republic of Cyprus, stating:
“Together, we have transformed and elevated the Cypriot space sector by aligning our vision and interests. I thank the Government of the Republic of Cyprus for its commitment to the space field and for demonstrating a true European spirit of cooperation. To the people of Cyprus, welcome to a journey of discovery, innovation, and shared progress. Welcome to ESA.”
The announcement concludes that Cyprus’s membership as an Associate Member of ESA will take effect in the coming months, following ratification of the agreement by the House of Representatives.
