Demy Assistant: The Only Greek-Speaking Digital Assistant for Android
Developed by an Amateur Programmer, Now Expanding Beyond Greek
Demy Assistant, the only available Greek-speaking digital assistant for Android smartphones, was created by amateur developer Dimitris Tharenos.
With a simple voice command, Demy can make calls, send messages, set alarms, or play a user’s favorite song. “Users can perform over 100 tasks using just their voice,” Tharenos said during the app's presentation in Thessaloniki.
Demy Assistant can significantly improve daily life for individuals with visual impairments. According to Tharenos, the app uses artificial intelligence to describe surroundings, people, and objects with remarkable accuracy. It can also read subtitles in real-time or dictate restaurant menus, including food options and prices.
However, the app is not limited to visually impaired users. Tharenos explains that Demy can also benefit elderly users, those unfamiliar with technology, and individuals with mobility impairments who need to operate their phone with one hand. “In reality, Demy Assistant is useful for everyone. We started with rotary phones, then moved to keypads and touchscreens. The next step is voice interaction with our devices,” he added.
Tharenos plans to further develop Demy Assistant, emphasizing its unique status as the only digital assistant with European roots. The app is now ready to be translated into additional languages.
Basic features of Demy Assistant are available for free on Tharenos’s website. To unlock full functionality, users can make a one-time donation, with all proceeds supporting the app’s further development.
