The digital platform called "e-fikardou," offering a comprehensive educational and interactive experience of both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the village of Fikardou, was delivered for public use by the Digital Heritage Lab of CUT (Cyprus University of Technology) and the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage.

According to a university announcement, the handover ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 28, conducted by UNESCO Chair scientists and Director Dr. Marinos Ioannides, to representatives of the local community, in the presence of the Commissioner for Mountain Area Development, Charalambos Christofides, the President of the Nicosia Development Company, Christos Pittaras, as well as the President and members of the Fikardou Community Council.

The digital platform e-fikardou highlights the rich history, unique architecture, local traditions, and vibrant culture of a symbolic village with centuries of history and architecture. It includes digitized models of the entire village and its monuments, an interactive e-book, a digital 3D tour, virtual exploration, and mapping of the cycling and hiking routes of Fikardou.

The village of Fikardou, the announcement continues, is deeply rooted in history and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved traditional architecture, offering a fascinating glimpse into rural life in Cyprus from previous centuries.

Among other objectives, the platform aims to enhance the community's digital literacy by promoting seamless interaction between village residents and modern technologies, while also boosting local tourism by enriching the visitor experience.

"Users from all over the world can now explore the narrow alleys, ancient structures, and picturesque homes of Fikardou, gaining a deeper appreciation for its unique heritage," the announcement concludes.
