Meta announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 10% in a memo shared with employees yesterday.

According to the memo, the cuts will begin this week and will be accompanied by a new round of organizational restructuring aimed at improving the company’s artificial intelligence workflows.

Meta’s Head of Human Resources, Janelle Gale, stated in the memo that the company plans to move 7,000 employees into new AI-related initiatives while also eliminating managerial roles, according to Reuters.

The cuts are part of a broader restructuring plan Meta has scheduled for this year.

As the company significantly increases investments in artificial intelligence, it aims to place the AI agents it develops at the center of both its product ecosystem and internal operations.

The changes reflect a wider trend of AI-linked workforce reductions across major U.S. companies, particularly within the technology sector, Reuters reported.

Focus on AI Development Teams

Overall, the layoffs and employee transfers are expected to affect roughly 20% of the company’s workforce.

Some transfers have already taken place, while others will be communicated to employees on Wednesday, Gale noted in the memo.

More broadly, Meta is repositioning employees into teams focused on developing AI agents.

Examples include the Applied AI Engineering (AAI) and Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA) XFN teams, two groups previously announced by CTO Andrew Bosworth as part of Meta’s “AI for Work” strategy.

Both initiatives aim to develop AI agents capable of autonomously performing tasks currently handled by humans.

Another destination for transferred employees is Central Analytics, a division focused on measuring productivity and analyzing data to support the development of AI agents.

The changes have triggered backlash among Meta employees, who have protested the moves by distributing flyers across company offices and posting angry messages on Workplace, according to Reuters.

More than 1,000 employees have also signed a petition condemning the installation of mouse-movement tracking software intended to train Meta’s AI models to replicate how humans interact with computers.

Others have openly clashed with company leadership. Executives are being criticized both for ignoring employee concerns over privacy issues linked to the tracking technology and for remaining silent about the planned layoffs for more than a month.
