RIF Launches Practical Guide to Help Innovators Navigate Funding and Support Programmes

Director General Theodoros Loukaidis outlines how to get started with RIF’s services, from goal-setting to proposal submission

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) is offering a more structured and accessible approach for entrepreneurs, researchers, and startups navigating its funding programmes and support services. A recent post by Theodoros Loukaidis, Director General of RIF, outlines essential tips for those at the beginning of their innovation journey, offering a clear roadmap on how to make the most of what the foundation has to offer.

Loukaidis emphasizes that RIF’s ecosystem is designed to support ambition at any stage—whether it’s building a company from scratch, scaling a business, or advancing a research career. But according to him, success starts with more than just spotting an open funding call.

Start With Strategy, Not Just a Call

One of the key takeaways is the importance of aligning personal or business objectives with the right programme. Instead of trying to fit an idea into the confines of a specific call, applicants are encouraged to begin by identifying their goals, assessing their needs, and understanding their project’s stage of development.

“Taking the time to match your idea with the right funding opportunity not only increases your chances of success, it also lays the foundation for something sustainable,” Loukaidis writes.

To help with this, RIF provides detailed documentation on each open call, including evaluation criteria, FAQs, and guides for evaluators—all accessible through its grants management portal.

A Wealth of Support for Newcomers and Veterans Alike

Beyond funding, the Foundation offers a host of support services. These include webinars tailored to each new call (with recordings available on RIF’s YouTube channel), Open Days for one-on-one interaction with staff, and events like the upcoming BASH on July 8, aimed at fostering networking among innovators.

Applicants can also receive support through the Central Knowledge Transfer Office, which assists with intellectual property protection and market potential assessments. Additionally, RIF serves as a national contact point for the EU’s Horizon Europe programme, offering guidance, training, and partner search tools for those applying at the European level.

Avoid the Last-Minute Rush

Loukaidis also warns against the pitfalls of last-minute proposal writing, noting that rushed submissions often lack the depth and quality evaluators look for. Starting early, he says, allows applicants to think strategically, involve the right collaborators, and fully leverage RIF’s support network.

As Cyprus continues to build momentum in research and innovation, initiatives like this guide from RIF serve as a reminder that accessible knowledge and structured support can make all the difference. By breaking down the process and emphasizing thoughtful planning, RIF is not only funding ideas—it’s helping shape the future of innovation on the island.
