CrowdStrike Reveals Cause Of Global Blackout
Falcon Platform's Content Control Failure Led To Worldwide Computer Disruptions
There was an issue with the content control subsystem, preventing the verification of a batch of instructions.
In a statement, CrowdStrike revealed the cause behind the collapse of computers worldwide, which led to chaos in airports, stock exchanges, banks, and thousands of companies and organizations across various sectors.
According to the company, there was a malfunction in the Falcon platform's control system, which protects computers from cyberattacks and malware from hackers.
Specifically, CrowdStrike reported a problem with the content control subsystem, which failed to verify a batch of instructions (Template Type) that guides the software in both threat detection and response. The Template Type has an internal control system, the Template Instance, which in this case failed to detect problematic content data within the batch of instructions.
CrowdStrike did not specify what the problematic content data was or why it was problematic. The company stated that it has added a "new check" to the quality control process in an effort to prevent a recurrence of the incident. Even if this was indeed the cause of the issue and there is a resolution, the largest digital crash to date should be thoroughly analyzed by all involved parties to develop the necessary safeguards to prevent such incidents, given that modern human civilization is increasingly interconnected through computers and the Internet daily.
