Cypriot Halloumi Cheese Exports Surge in 2023
Accounting For 20.49% Of Cyprus’ Export Value
Exports of Halloumi cheese in the initial four months of 2023 reached 111.8 million euros, accounting for 20.49% of Cyprus' export value, reported Petros Xenophontos, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment.
Speaking at the 4th Halloumi and Trachana Festival in Meniko on behalf of the Cypriot President, Xenophontos celebrated the European Commission's recognition of "Halloumi" as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product in October 2021. "This acknowledgment not only marks a milestone for Cyprus' agricultural sector but also enhances the overall economy by highlighting the unique value of Halloumi cheese,” he stated.
Highlighting the growing global appetite for Halloumi, the Minister emphasized its significance in the export market. Yet, he also stressed the importance of maintaining the cheese's high-quality standards, noting that its market demand is directly tied to its excellence.
"Ensuring the quality and reputation of Halloumi is a collaborative effort, involving both cheese and dairy producers," Xenophontos remarked. He affirmed the Ministry's ongoing support for these initiatives.
He concluded by lauding Halloumi as the crown jewel of traditional Cypriot agricultural products, noting its role in paving the way for other Cypriot products like trachana soup on the global stage.
