Cyprus Moves Forward with "GreenH2CY" Project for Green Hydrogen Production
Significant Progress Made in the Implementation of the Project
Another important milestone in the implementation of the pioneering and innovative GreenH2CY project to produce green hydrogen in Cyprus has been achieved!
The issuing of the Planning Permit on 25/9/2024, following the approval of the project by the Council of Ministers, essentially paves the way for the implementation of the first project for the production and distribution of green hydrogen for use in transport, with the significant avoidance of more than 2,200 tons of CO₂ per year, marking the beginning of the new era of decarbonization of transport.
The GreenH2CY project was announced in 2023 and will produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources for the transport sector, to refuel trucks or other vehicles with environmentally friendly fuel - green hydrogen - towards the transition to hydrogen-fueled vehicles and the replacement of diesel.
GreenH2CY is co-funded by the European Union through the Innovation Fund managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
The GreenH2CY project involves the installation and operation of a 2-megawatt (MW) electrolyser, a hydrogen storage facility and a fuelling station in the Aradippou area very close to the motorway connecting the Kalo Chorio roundabout to Larnaca Airport.
Cyprus is making significant steps towards the energy transition, with the GreenH2CY green hydrogen project in full progress, with the project’s implementation horizon in 2026. This project is a central pillar for the promotion of renewable energy in the country - particularly for the transport sector - and the achievement of Cyprus’ ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, actively contributing to the mitigation of climate change.
Green hydrogen is produced exclusively without the use of fossil fuels, since the electricity supplied to the electrolytes comes from renewable energy sources, with the guaranteed certificates of origin. This clean fuel offers enormous energy storage potential, while being completely free of pollutants. The application of green hydrogen is widespread in the transport, industrial and power generation sectors, paving the way for the creation of a zero- emission economy and the development of the hydrogen economy in Cyprus.
The main benefits of the project are:
-
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The use of green hydrogen contributes significantly to the reduction of CO 2 emissions, making Cyprus one of the pioneering countries in the Mediterranean region to adopt such innovative technologies.
-
Energy security: With the development of green hydrogen, Cyprus is reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, enhancing the country’s energy security.
-
Creating new jobs: The implementation of the project leads to new employment
opportunities, both in the renewable energy sector and in the related sectors associated with hydrogen and energy storage infrastructure. -
Technological innovation: The development and application of green hydrogen technology paves the way for innovation and specialization of the Cypriot industry in clean energy technologies.
With the continued progress of the project, Cyprus is strengthening its role in the energy transition and demonstrating its commitment to achieving its environmental goals. Green hydrogen, as the fuel of the future, is expected to play a key role in the move towards a more sustainable and green economy.
