Cyprus President Foresees Expanded Partnership with Royal Caribbean
“The Presence of Such a Prestigious Company in Cyprus Signifies a Vote of Confidence for Our Economy, Shipping Sector, and Ports”
During a visit to Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas, moored at Limassol port, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism about expanding cooperation with the cruise giant. The 347-meter vessel, which had arrived in the morning, prepared to embark on its journey to Civitavecchia, Italy, later that day, notably excluding the Israeli port of Haifa from its route due to current circumstances.
President Christodoulides, joined by Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis, toured the impressive cruise ship. He highlighted Royal Caribbean's engagement in Cyprus as a significant endorsement of the nation's economy, shipping industry, and port capabilities. Emphasizing the strategic importance of this collaboration, Christodoulides remarked, "The presence of such a prestigious company in Cyprus signifies a vote of confidence for our economy, shipping sector, and ports."
In a response to his invitation to visit the Odyssey of the Seas, the President mentioned the potential for broadened cooperation with Royal Caribbean, beyond the immediate tourism and maritime aspects. "We have begun dialogues and expect to share more positive news regarding various facets of our partnership soon," he added.
The President underlined the critical role of tourism in Cyprus's economy and hinted at forthcoming developments, not only in tourism but also regarding the Cypriot maritime flag and other collaborative areas. His visit followed a notable move by Royal Caribbean to register the Odyssey's sister ship, Spectrum of the Seas, under the Cypriot flag and the recent opening of its European office in Limassol.
Concluding his remarks, President Christodoulides addressed queries about these recent developments, suggesting the likelihood of additional Royal Caribbean ships registering under the Cypriot flag. "This signifies just another realm in which our cooperation can grow," he stated, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening Cyprus's ties with the global cruise leader.
