Electricity Rate Hike Battle Heats Up

Authority Challenges Regulatory Decision

The Electricity Authority (EAC) is set to challenge a recent decision by the Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), which turned down their request for a 25% hike in the fundamental electricity tariffs, by filling a court case.

The Authority's move is primarily driven by its ambition to reclaim previously approved operational and other expenses, along with an intent to green-light new developmental projects.

However, shedding light on the union's perspective, Mr. Sotos Savva, President of the SEPAIK union, revealed that the union was kept in the dark regarding this development. He highlighted that there was no mention of this issue in a recent union meeting with the EAC's Administrative Council. Emphasizing a preference for dialogue over litigation, Mr. Savva stated, "Such matters ought to be settled through consultations and dialogue, rather than resorting to the courts."
