Green Line Trade and Crossings Soar in 2022: Commission's Annual Report Reveals Record Growth
According to the Commission's annual report on the implementation of the Green Line Regulation, both trade and crossings through the Green Line witnessed a significant increase in 2022 compared to 2021.
Trade across the Green Line experienced a remarkable surge of 138%, reaching a record value of over €14.6 million in 2022. In contrast, the value stood at approximately €6.2 million in 2021.
The report also highlights a substantial rise in the number of crossings made by Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, other EU citizens, and third country nationals. In 2022, the total number of crossings reached nearly 6 million, whereas only 2.3 million crossings were recorded in 2021. This increase signifies a positive return to normalcy following the COVID-19 pandemic, as noted in the report.
Furthermore, the Commission's annual report includes details of the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community in 2022. The EU committed a total of €33.4 million in funding for the year.
Within this funding, €5 million has been allocated to the scholarship program for Turkish Cypriot students. This program has already benefitted over 2,000 students since its initiation in 2007 and will provide support to an additional 300 students.
Moreover, the bi-communal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage has received €2.6 million to sustain its ongoing efforts in restoring and safeguarding cultural monuments throughout Cyprus. To date, the committee has successfully contributed to the preservation of more than 120 monuments.
The Commission continues to assist the Turkish Cypriot community in aligning with EU standards concerning food safety and animal health. Compliance with these standards would enable Turkish Cypriot cheese producers to trade halloumi across the Green Line, facilitating its placement on the EU market.
Recently, the Commission announced the establishment of an Information and Support Center for Cypriot businesses and individuals involved in legitimate trade through the Green Line. In partnership with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, this EU-funded initiative aims to provide comprehensive assistance to stakeholders engaged in commercial transactions across the Green Line. Starting in October 2023, the one-stop shop will offer advisory services, personalized support, and facilitate connections between buyers and sellers. An online platform in Greek and Turkish will also be developed to serve as a central hub for information, fostering increased trade activities. The ultimate goal is to promote economic development, cooperation, and reunification of the island while ensuring compliance with European regulations and standards.
