Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB) Condemns Disruptive Port Work Stoppage
The Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB) has strongly criticized the ongoing work stoppage led by the Notaries at the Larnaca port, now in its second day. In a formal statement, OEB expressed its dismay over the unnecessary disruption caused by this action, emphasizing that it has led to the unwarranted paralysis of port operations in Larnaca.
This has resulted in disruptions to the efficient and timely servicing of a considerable number of ships. The situation is aggravated by the fact that this action transgresses the norms outlined in the Industrial Relations Code, and this transgression is occurring despite ongoing discussions involving both parties at the Ministry of Labour.
OEB asserts that the work stoppage, initiated without the context of a labor dispute and in advance of the completion of the Ministry's procedure, is a clear violation of established labor mechanisms. This disruptive action has a far-reaching impact, affecting essential commodities such as basic products, raw materials, and grains that require immediate delivery to the market.
The federation advocates that the recurrence of unjustified strikes, carried out in contravention of labor protocols and processes, needs to cease. OEB has consistently underscored the urgency of addressing these actions, noting that their prevalence is largely attributed to the absence of a comprehensive regulatory framework for managing labor disputes in essential services.
OEB's statement further highlights the ongoing strain that the absence of a protective framework for essential service operations places on both the economy and society. The federation reiterates its call to the government, urging it to take action to safeguard the economy by promptly enacting legislation related to the Agreement on the Procedure for the Resolution of Labor Disputes in Essential Services.
