GSI: Government Softens Tone After Sharp Remarks on ADMIE

Christodoulides highlights the strong Cyprus–Greece relations ahead of official statements from Athens.

President Nikos Christodoulides appeared to ease tensions today following the particularly harsh tone of his remarks yesterday about ADMIE and the GSI project. In a noticeable shift in tone, rhetoric, and intensity, the President emphasized this morning that “Relations between the Cypriot Government and the Greek Government are stronger than ever.”

He made the statement upon his arrival at the “Maritime Cyprus 2025” International Conference in Limassol. This comes as Athens is expected to issue official statements following yesterday’s emergency meeting at the Greek Prime Minister’s office, where the Environment Ministry and ADMIE’s leadership met to assess Christodoulides’ critical comments.

Asked whether the dispute with ADMIE had caused a crisis in Cyprus–Greece relations, the President replied: “The relations between Athens and Nicosia, between the Cypriot Government and the Greek Government — my relationship with the Greek Prime Minister — are stronger than ever before.”

He added a pointed message: “I want to send a clear message: those who invest in a rift between the Greek and Cypriot Governments, or between myself and the Greek Prime Minister, will be disappointed.”

Christodoulides stressed that recent actions already demonstrate this close cooperation.

When asked whether he had spoken with the Greek Prime Minister following the meeting at the Maximos Mansion, he simply said: “All I wish to state is what I have already mentioned — and that answers all relevant questions.”

Spokesman Calls for Respect of the Framework Agreement

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis underlined the need for all parties involved to respect the framework agreement governing the electricity interconnection project.

Speaking on Proino Dromologio, Letymbiotis explained that the project’s implementing body had reiterated what is already stipulated in the framework agreement on the interconnection.

At the same time, he emphasized that Nicosia and Athens remain in constant communication, recalling that after their recent meeting in New York, President Christodoulides and Prime Minister Mitsotakis issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to implementing the project.
