Paphos Development Projects: Over €230m for 75+ Works
Christodoulides outlines major Paphos development projects, from a 1,000-berth marina to water security, roads, health, education, and defense.
Nikos Christodoulides announced on Tuesday more than 75 development projects for Paphos, with a total budget exceeding €230 million. Speaking during a wide-ranging district meeting with local authorities and stakeholders, the President highlighted investments spanning tourism, culture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, social care, defense, and the green transition.
Paphos Marina: A Tourism Landmark
The President confirmed the tender for the long-awaited Paphos Marina, a landmark development covering 165,000 square meters with the capacity to host 1,000 yachts. The project, he said, will generate hundreds of jobs, strengthen the tourism product, and elevate Paphos as a premier maritime destination.
Cultural Heritage and Education Investments
In culture, the government is advancing the creation of a Cultural Park and amphitheater in Acheleia, alongside the digital upgrade of the Paphos Archaeological Museum and renovations to the Ancient Odeon and Chrysopolitissa pedestrian bridges.
In education, Christodoulides announced the expansion of the All-Day Gymnasium model and the launch of six new all-day schools. He also referred to major school upgrades: the conversion of Agios Kendeas sites into a new Gymnasium and Primary School, and investments in Timi Primary (€2m) and Chlorakas A’ Primary (€4m). Expansions are also underway at the Empa Lyceum and Technical School.
Healthcare Upgrades at Paphos General Hospital
Healthcare projects focus on the modernization of Paphos General Hospital. Works include the €3 million expansion of the Accident & Emergency Department, which is already supported by the new Rapid Access Clinic, having served more than 1,700 patients in recent months. Additional projects involve a €5 million Day Care Unit, upgrades to Pediatric and Gynecology Departments, and the creation of a new Pulmonology Clinic.
Infrastructure and Mobility
On infrastructure, Christodoulides outlined major works including the Paphos–Polis highway with access through Mesogi, the Western Bypass (€11m), the Northern Bypass of Geroskipou (€4.5m), the widening of Emba Avenue (€9.5m), and the upgrade of Apostolos Pavlos Avenue (€7m). A new road will also connect Paphos and Geroskipou to the airport, improving mobility and reducing congestion.
Water Security and Green Transition
Addressing Cyprus’s third consecutive year of drought, the President stressed immediate government action with 28 measures to ensure water adequacy. Central to this effort is the installation of a mobile desalination unit in Kissonerga (€14.7m), already underway and expected to be completed by the end of October.
The government has also approved grants for small hotel desalination plants, with 13 applications submitted — two in Paphos already approved and four under final review. Additional investments include new boreholes in Peyia, Lysos, and Kinousa, breakwater projects for Paphos’s southwestern coasts, and the construction of a new fire station in Peyia (€6.7m).
Social Care and Community Development
Social care initiatives include the Long-Term Care and Activity Center for the Elderly and the support of the “Nefelis Talioti” care home in Chlorakas, developed in partnership with local authorities.
Community-focused works cover the revamp of central squares and streets in Inia (€1.5m), Kelokedara (€2.5m), and Kouklia (€2.5m), as well as the Tremithousa–Mesogi bridge (€3m). Road upgrades are also underway in Koili, Tsada, Tala, Tremithousa, Mesa Chorio, and Armou, while the Akamas National Forest Park Sustainable Development Plan is progressing with a new Local Coordination Office.
Defense and Regional Role
Finally, Christodoulides underlined the strategic importance of Paphos in defense and security with the upgrade of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in cooperation with the United States.
