The Dreams Behind the Medals

The Dreams Behind the Medals

For most teenagers, afternoons are spent with friends, family or relaxing after school. For the athletes of Cyprus' National Rhythmic Gymnastics Ensemble, however, everyday life looks very different.

Five hours of training every weekday. Eight hours on Saturdays. Countless repetitions, demanding routines, and an endless pursuit of perfection—all while balancing schoolwork and maintaining excellent academic performance.

Behind every graceful performance lies years of discipline, determination and sacrifice.

For Annita Andreou, wearing the Cyprus emblem is both a privilege and a responsibility.

"I feel proud to have the opportunity to represent my country in international competitions. Wearing the national colours is a great honour and a great responsibility," she says.

Anastasia Lazaridou shares the same sense of pride, explaining that representing Cyprus goes far beyond medals and rankings.

"It's not only about results. It's about representing my country, gaining new experiences and growing—not only as an athlete, but also as a person."

Like every elite athlete, the girls face demanding schedules and difficult moments, but their passion for rhythmic gymnastics is what keeps them going.

For Christiana Papakyriakou, the greatest motivation comes from her love for the sport, the strong bond she shares with her teammates and her desire to keep improving every single day.

Sofia-Diana Christofi sees each training session as an opportunity to become better than she was the day before, while Olga Afxentiou is driven by a dream shared by many young athletes around the world: standing on the podium at the biggest competitions, including the Olympic Games.

Despite their different personalities and journeys, all five athletes are united by one common goal—to make Cyprus proud.

For Annita, the ultimate dream is competing at the Olympic Games. Olga has already set her sights on Los Angeles 2028. Christiana hopes to achieve major international success for Cyprus, while Anastasia dreams of proudly representing her country wherever the sport takes her.

Success, however, comes at a price.

Training takes up almost all of their free time, leaving little room for social activities, hobbies or even family celebrations. Yet none of the girls speak of these sacrifices with regret. Instead, they see them as part of the journey towards achieving their goals.

Perhaps that's why the advice they all give to younger girls who dream of following in their footsteps is remarkably similar.

Never give up.

Believe in yourself. Work hard every day. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Keep chasing your dreams, even when success feels far away.

As Annita puts it, "There will come a day when every sacrifice and every hour of hard work will be rewarded."

The athletes of Cyprus' National Rhythmic Gymnastics Ensemble are chasing more than medals. They are pursuing dreams that began when they were just four years old—dreams fuelled by discipline, resilience and an unwavering belief that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.

As they continue representing Cyprus on the international stage, they hope their journey will inspire the next generation of young gymnasts to dream big and believe in themselves.
