"5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche" Returns to Cyprus with English Subtitles
Acclaimed Comedy Explores Identity, Secrets, and Quiche in 1950s America
The theatrical play 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder was performed in Greek for the first time under the direction of Evita Ioannou as part of the theYard.Residency.21 program by the Center of Performing Arts MITOS. The production premiered in December 2021 and completed a successful run of 35 sold-out performances in Limassol, Nicosia, and Athens.
Set in 1956, the play takes place during the annual meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein. Gathering in the basement of a church, the women are there for their much-anticipated quiche contest. These women adore quiche—more than anyone else in history has ever loved quiche. Their motto is simple: "No men, no meat, just manners."
However, the outside world is thrown into chaos when a nuclear explosion interrupts the proceedings, forcing the characters to confront their secrets and their sexual identities.
The play will be performed every Monday in January 2024 at WhereHaus612 in Nicosia. Selected performances will feature English surtitles, making it accessible to a wider audience.
