Art In The City

Rediscovering Cypriot art and its effect on the international scene

Digital TV’s series of tributes, ‘Art in the City’, by the Press and Information Office, presents the work of Cypriot artists of different artistic expressions.

The first artist to ‘give us a tour’ of his art and life, Theodoulos Gregoriou, was born in Malounta in 1956. He studied painting, with a UNESCO scholarship, at the Institute de Arte Plastice N. Grigorescu in Bucharest, Romania. He continued his studies at the Ècole des Beaux Arts and Residence at the Citè International des Arts in Paris. He is a correspondent member of the Cypriot Academy of Science, Education and Arts. In 1990, his contribution at the Bienalle Venice kickstarted his presence on the global artistic stage. Ever since he has presented exhibitions in significant galleries in Nicosia, Athens, Salonika, Paris, Zurich, Koln, Seoul, Cameroon, and more recently the Louvre, the Les Abattoirs Museum of Modern Art in Toulouse, Tretyakov, Moscow, Vienna, the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art in Salonika, and the National Museum of Modern art, MNAC in Bucharest, among others.

In 1995, he created the monument, ‘Psifisma’, for the European Cultural Month. ‘Psifisma’ serves as an ode to human rights and it describes the first articles of the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights, in Greek. It was placed at the last vacant spot of Lidra Street, before the barricade. His work is displayed in public spaces, such as the Parc Royal in Toulouse, the University of Cyprus, THOC, ANAD, major museums, public and private collections, including UNESCO’s collection in Paris. Theodoulos Gregoriou works in Nicosia and Paris.

Mr Gregoriou’s works of art serve as a great opportunity for expatriates to retain their connection with Cypriot culture, as they are displayed in multiple countries across the world.
