Cyta Unveils First Telephone Booth Time Capsule in Agros

A Fusion of Technology, Heritage, and Sustainability

Cyta has introduced the first of 28 traditional telephone booths repurposed as a "Time Capsule" in the heart of the Agros community. Inside the Time Capsule booth, visitors can explore a bilingual historical journey presented through specially designed illustrated material that narrates the evolution of telecommunications in Cyprus, as stated in Cyta’s press release.

"A historic telephone booth has been given new life and purpose, merging technology, culture, and a commitment to connecting people and communities," the statement highlighted.

The unveiling event took place on Thursday, February 13, offering a distinctive experience to attendees, including the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Charalambos Christofinas, media representatives, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, and Cyta’s collaborators.

According to the press release, the Time Capsule serves as a landmark where cultural heritage meets modern technology. Through a QR code, visitors can access multimedia content, delving deeper into the history of these booths and their role in Cyprus’ communication landscape.

The interior of the booth is illuminated, utilizing solar energy wherever technically feasible, underscoring Cyta’s commitment to sustainable development and eco-friendly practices.

Strengthening Local Development Through Innovation

“This initiative by our organization goes beyond preserving history. It actively contributes to local development by enriching the tourism offerings of communities like Agros and promoting human connection through technology,” stated Maria Tsiakka Olympiou, Chair of Cyta’s Board. She further emphasized that the Agros Time Capsule is a tribute to Cyprus’ historical ties with telecommunications while inspiring future generations to embrace technology as a tool for growth and progress.

Antonis Tsolakis, the Community Leader of Agros, expressed pride in hosting the first Telephone Booth Time Capsule. “This is a remarkable initiative by Cyta, which we will wholeheartedly embrace, utilizing it as both a cultural heritage asset and an educational tool for our youth,” he stated.
